CJ Biomaterials Secures BPI, TÜV AUSTRIA Certifications for New PHACT™ All-PHA Compound Designed for Home Compostable Cutlery

  • PHACT™ CB0104A earned BPI Commercial and Home Compostable, TÜV AUSTRIA OK compost HOME & OK compost INDUSTRIAL Certifications
  • New all-PHA compound is designed for cutlery, caps, enclosures, beauty packaging, and agriculture, and horticulture applications
  • Blend of amorphous and semi-crystalline PHA delivers improved flexibility, toughness, and heat stability with faster cycle times for injection-molded products compared to crystalline polylactic acid (cPLA)

WOBURN, Mass., Sept. 30, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CJ Biomaterials, Inc., a division of South Korea-based CJ CheilJedang and a primary producer of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers, has secured compostability certification for PHACT™ CB0104A, its new all-PHA compound designed for injection molding applications including cutlery, caps, enclosures, beauty packaging, agriculture, and horticulture. PHACT™ CB0104A is now certified for Commercial and Home compostability through the Biodegradable Products Institute and has also earned TÜV AUSTRIA OK compost HOME and OK compost INDUSTRIAL compostability certifications.

The new PHACT™ CB0104A compound is a combination of CJ Biomaterials’ neat biobased PHA resins, PHACT™ A1000P amorphous PHA (aPHA) and PHACT™ S1000P semi-crystalline PHA (scPHA). PHACT™ A1000P, CJ Biomaterials’ proprietary PHA resin, is a soft and flexible material that reduces brittleness and improves processability when combined with other biopolymers. PHACT™ S1000P resin is a more rigid PHA that provides toughness and high-heat stability.

PHACT™ CB0104A features an excellent heat deflection temperature (HDT) and can be run on standard existing cold and hot runner injection molding machines. In cutlery applications, CB0104A is suitable for both hot and cold foods. The CB0104A compound is also certified for home compost environments at thicknesses up to 1.8mm, delivering an effective solution for typical cutlery, which is approximately 1mm thick.

“With PHACT™ CB0104A, we have developed a remarkable compound that combines the home compostable consumers and brands are looking for alongside the performance and production efficiency that converters expect,” says John Licata, newly appointed Head of Research & Development at CJ Biomaterials. “Internal testing confirmed that this compound can be processed using standard injection molding equipment and achieve cycle times that are highly competitive. This could enable substantially greater production throughput compared to incumbent commercially compostable cutlery without requiring specialized equipment or major changes to existing manufacturing processes.”

PHAs are a naturally occurring biodegradable polymer made by microorganisms, which naturally produce and store PHAs inside their cells as an energy reserve when fed sugars, plant oils, or other carbon-rich feedstocks during fermentation. PHACT™ PHA is certified as biobased by USDA BioPreferred and TÜV Austria, and OK biodegradable MARINE and OK biodegradable SOIL by TÜV Austria. It does not contain any per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and does not leave persistent microplastics behind.
